David Mosher

I’ve been an artist all my life. Being an artist is a state of mind and, the only label I am comfortable with. In the 70’s, I was in the Under 30 show at the Portland Art Museum, won 3rd place in Professional Painting at the Bellevue Northwest Arts and Crafts Fair and was then chosen to be in one of the early Bumbershoot Festivals in Seattle.

In 1974 I was doing technical illustration. Then my first wife, and friends from University of Oregon, founded Art Media. Art Media was Portland, and Oregons’ premier Art Supply store (and eventually 3 stores) for 37 years until 2011 when we were purchased by Blick Art Materials, a national chain.

From the 70’s until now I have sporadically created paintings and have mostly kept them to myself.

I graduated from the University of Oregon with a BS in Fine Art in 1971. In college I started in Engineering, then changed to printmaking, and eventually painting was the process that allowed me to express visually what I felt inside and is my vehicle for expression to this day.

My favorite artists are MC Escher, Franz Kline, Helen Frankenthaler, and Morris Louis. Morris Louis inspired me to get rid of brushes, staple my canvases to the floor and let the paint flow.

Over the years I have experimented with many styles, but I always come back to raw canvas, stapled to the floor, and lots of liquid acrylic paint.

My painting process is organic and reactionary, building and responding from layer to layer until I reach the final destination.
